The ABI and the British Medical Association (BMA) have struck a “landmark” five-year deal over the quality of medical reports prepared by GPs for their patients and the fees paid by insurers for those reports.

Under the agreement, the price for standard GP reports, supplementary reports and full medical examinations will each increase by 6% per year for the next five years.

The ABI said: “Enshrined in the new agreement is a strong reminder from the BMA to GPs to provide high quality reports to insurance companies”.

Richard Walsh, the ABI's head of health insurance, said: “GP reports help to ensure that people with pre-existing medical conditions have access to health and protection insurance.

"This agreement is good news for all customers, because again the BMA has pledged to uphold high standards of work from doctors. This includes making sure that doctors fill in forms personally and accurately, rather than simply sending printouts of medical records which may not give the insurer the information it needs.

“It's also good news both for the medical profession and insurers, as the five-year deal provides both stability and certainty.”
