Marsh is understood to have been looking at consolidator Oval in a deal that would have transformed the UK broking landscape.
However Insurance Times understands that talks have stalled and there is no deal on the table at present.
Oval chairman Philip Hodson said the rumours were "absolutely absurd". Marsh declined to comment.
