Myners probes Treasury over impact of equality judgement
The government has expressed its disappointment about the European Court of Justice’s ban on insurance companies using gender as a pricing factor.
Responding to a question from former Treasury minister Lord Myners, Commercial Secretary Lord Sassoon said: “The government are disappointed by this judgment. We made very clear our concerns about any move to prevent the use of gender as a risk factor in the pricing of insurance policies.
“The Government will continue to work closely with the Financial Services Authority and the Association of British Insurers in order to ensure that the negative impacts for customers and industry are reduced as far as possible.”
Labour peer Lord Myners had quizzed Lord Sassoon on the action being taken by the government to prevent the ECJ’s judgment of gender equality undermining the efficient operation of the United Kingdom’s insurance market.
