A third of all home loans taken out in the last six months of 2000 were protected by insurance, compared with less than a quarter in 1998, according to figures released by the Council of Mortgage Lenders and the Association of British Insurers.
At the end of last year, there were 2,356,000 mortgage payment protection policies in existence, covering 21% of all home loans.
