A group of 17 MPs have signed an early day motion in the House of Commons hitting out at the FSA's intention not to regulate travel agents acting as insurance intermediaries.

The motion said: "That this House notes with concern that consumers who buy travel insurance from a travel agent or tour operator are not protected by statutory regulation.

"It further notes that direct sellers of travel insurance currently subscribe to a voluntary code and will be subject to statutory regulation via the Financial Services Authority from January 2005; further notes that recent research by Which Magazine found that only one out of a sample of 28 travel agents sought to establish whether customers had any pre-existing medical conditions; and calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to adopt full FSA regulation of travel agents' sale of travel insurance."
