Hoffman has had previous roles with Barclaycard and Barclays

Hastings Insurance chairman Gary Hoffman is to become the non-executive chairman of digital banking platform Monzo.

Hoffman, who was Hastings chief executive until March last year, joins Monzo after the start-up raised funds, valuing the company at £1bn, reported Sky News.

Hoffman is an experienced banker, most well-known for taking the helm at Northern Rock in 2008 following its emergency nationalisation.

He previously held senior roles with Barclaycard and Barclays.

Hoffman, who took over as Hastings chief executive in 2012, replaced Mike Fairey in January last year as non-executive chairman, as the leadership team was reshuffled.
