Norwich Union has said that its support services, including IT, properties and facilities management are being restructured.
The company said the move is designed to make the suppport services more efficient in meeting the needs of a large and complex business, and encourage sharing of best-practice and innovation.
NU said the detail of these changes will be finalised over the next few weeks and staff will be given a timetable of when they will know what this means for them by the end of January.
The insurer said for many people there will be no change to their roles. However it added that there may be some redundancies, particularly where there are areas of duplication.
A statement on the company website said it is too early to say how many and that it hopes that much of any reduction will be achieved through natural turnover and by not filling vacancies.
It added: "As always, we will seek to avoid compulsory redundancies where possible."
Ir also said that there are no planned location closures as part of this announcement.
