More than three quarters of home and car insurance customers use the internet to research the market, the AA said today.
“Even those who don't have access to a computer often ask computer-literate friends or family to do the searching for them, but complete the deal offline,” AA Insurance head of marketing David Tyers said.
Research by the insurer found that 40% of new car insurance is purchased online, while about a fifth of homecover is brought online.
The cheapest shop around motor insurance premiums fell by almost 2% in the fourth quarter, widening the gap to 35%, the AA said.
The cost of the cheapest home insurance premiums quoted also fell nearly 2 per cent faster than the average.
