Products recalled in the US but not the UK sever fingers

More than 15 UK families are suing Maclaren, claiming their children had fingertips severed by buggy hinges, the BBC reports.

More than 30 parents have contacted BBC News saying their children were treated in hospital after lacerating their fingertips in Maclaren buggies. Some cases date back several years.

On 9 October, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall about one million Maclaren buggies. It said: “The stroller's hinge mechanism poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller.

Amputations

“The firm has received 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller's hinge mechanism, resulting in 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.”

Maclaren did not recall the buggies, made in China, in the UK. Its website insists the buggies are “completely safe” but it is offering hinge covers as free add-ons.

Maclaren would not say who its insurer was.
