The number of people covered by private medical insurance is growing, according to the ABI.

In its latest PMI report the ABI said that more than 6.7 million people, or 11.4% of the population, had such cover at the end of 2002.

The figures revealed strong growth in the corporate sector, with a 27% expansion since 1997. While the ABI admitted that demand for corporate schemes had reduced the demand for individual polices, such products were still popular.

ABI head of health Richard Walsh said: "Employers are becoming increasingly aware of the advantages of offering PMI as an employee benefit.

"It is a valuable perk to attract and retain high quality staff in an environment that has seen skills shortages in many areas."
