MOTOR premiums could rise by an estimated £50 as a result of EU proposals to
make drivers liable for accidents with cyclists.
Drivers' insurers would have to pay out, regardless of which side was at
fault, for medical and repair costs.
The proposal was met with fury by drivers' groups. The RAC estimated it
would add 10% to motor premiums, pushing costs up by an average of £50.
The plan is set out in the EU Fourth Motor Insurance Directive, which also
requires insurers to have representatives in 18 European states to handle
claims involving visitors to different states.
