RAC Claims Services said it supported the recommendations in the government's Greenaway report on uninsured driving.

RAC Claims Services managing director Phil Chapman said law-abiding drivers felt passionately about the issue, but it was not an easy problem to solve.

“The report has for the first time given us a much better idea of the profile of the uninsured driver, with a strong link between this and young inner city males.

“Many have made the cynical decision that premiums are too expensive and they don't care enough, if at all, about the consequences of driving recklessly and hurting or killing someone.

“Professor Greenaway's recommendation, that penalties should be increased and cars belonging to uninsured drivers might be crushed, removes the problem of individual cars on the road, but we also need to address the problem before it arises and tackle the behavioural root of the problem.

“Our challenge is to make uninsured driving a social crime as serious as drink driving, while also increasing the fines so that the numbers do not add up for those who think they might save themselves the cost of insurance.

“RAC Claims Services welcomes the full consultation that will now take place on how the government plans to take the recommendations of car impounding and crushing forward.

“But we also need to see the insurance industry think about how to break the uninsurance cycle.”
