The motorway speed limit should be raised from 70mph to 80mph at certain times on some stretches of motorway, the AA said.

According to research from online motor insurer, www.motorinsurance.co.uk, 82% of motorists also think the speed limit should be raised.

Almost half (48%) of the motorists questioned supported the AA's proposal for variable speed limits, claiming that 80mph in the right conditions is perfectly safe.

A further third (34%) say 70mph is too low a limit, but think drivers should be trusted to make their own decisions and there should be no upper limit.
