Royal & SunAlliance (R&SA) has unveiled a new broker segment for the smaller end of the commercial market.

R&SA strategy and development director Tesh Patel said that the new broker segment, Access, will include around 4,000-5,000 brokers who have commercial accounts worth up to £250,000 to £300,000 with R&SA.

The segment sits alongside its 125 broker-strong Energy segment and its 700 Partner brokers.

Patel said a new distribution proposition to service the Access segment had also been created, called the Access Proposition.

Under the strategy, when placing risks for small businesses with turnover of less than £1m, Access brokers will use R&SA's Enterprise proposition. When placing risks for businesses with turnover of between £1m and £100m, R&SA has created two dedicated account servicing teams based out of Hartford and Leeds.

The teams are a mix of sales-focused staff and underwriters.

Patel said the new approach was formulated after feedback from brokers revealed that they were happy with its claims service and products, but wanted better access to R&SA staff and, in particular, underwriters.
