Royal & Sun Alliance (R&SA) has extended its Geographical Risk Assessment (GRA) mapping tool to assess arson risks.
Using data from the government, fire brigades, socio-economic information and the company's own historical claims knowledge, R&SA claims it can now assess the likelihood of an arson attack by individual property.
The intranet-based application grades all properties into five risk categories from negligible through to extreme. Salford magistrates court, for example, is rated as extreme while Hampton Court Palace is negligible.
The insurer already uses its GRA system to assess the risk of flooding and subsidence for every household and business in Britain.
Graham Heale, underwriting director for property at R&SA, said: “Dealing with arson-related claims has always been a significant issue for commercial insurers, and this tool helps us to address that issue.
“For the first time customers at a low risk of arson aren't subsidising those at a higher risk.”
