Royal & SunAlliance (R&SA), hit by asbestos, flood and 11 September-related claims, is to axe 1,200 staff.

R&SA is to cut 520 staff at its Bristol office; 250 in Liverpool and 200 in Horsham. A further 230 jobs will be shed from its UK salesforce.

The announcement came as the insurer announced an 18% fall in operating profits, and raised its provision for claims resulting from 11 September by £66m.

But R&SA said the job cuts related to a shake-up at its life and pensions business. The insurer sold its group risk business to Canada Life two weeks ago for £60m.

At that stage, both companies had said staff would be transferred to the merged group or re-located.

R&SA said it was shifting its focus towards the general insurance market and away from life insurance.
