Road safety groups are furious over plans for a new policy to compensate drivers banned for speeding.
An insurance policy aimed at compensating drivers banned for speeding has received widespread condemnation from road safety groups.
The policy has been created as a result of the sharp rise in motorists losing their licences after receiving their fourth speed camera penalty.
The policy, FlashProtect, would enable a driver to claim up to £6,000 to pay for transport, including taxis or a chauffeur-driven car. FlashProtect can be added to a driver's existing motoring insurance for £50. Only drivers with fewer than six points will be allowed to apply.
A spokesperson for FlashProtect said: "Many people now drive everywhere and are utterly dependent on their cars. This policy is a comfort thing, especially for those who have to drive for their jobs and may be sacked if they lose their licence."
However, The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety declared: "It is disgraceful to sell a policy which is tantamount to saying it's OK to speed."
