Tales of warranties that attempt to exclude all claims are legion. So when a bar in Scotland received an extremely competitive quote from First Light Underwriting Agency for its commercial policy, the warranties were carefully scrutinised.

And sure enough, the bar manager spotted a warranty that said: "Except when actually in use, all safes and any area used for the storage of wines and spirits, tobacco, cigars, cigarettes will be kept locked and all keys removed to a place of safekeeping."

The manager imagined having to let the punters in one by one, closing and locking the door behind each one as the entire bar could be considered a storage area for wines, spirits and tobacco.

That is until the agency clarified that "in use" meant the entire time pub was open.
