AIG has become the subject of a second US investigation prompting its chairman to speak out against the “difficulties” it is facing at home.
AIG announced yesterday it would be questioned by a federal grand jury about its alleged involvement in helping an Indiana mobile phone distributor to cover up millions in business losses.
But AIG chief executive Maurice Greenberg said the timing of the investigation was “certainly not by accident” given that AIG is already involved in the Spitzer enquiry.
Greenberg, father of Jeffrey Greenberg, chief executive of Marsh & McLennan - the company at the centre of the Spitzer investigation said of the situation: “it's strange”.
He said: “We do business all over the world, and the place we're having the most difficulty is right here in the United States.”
