Sports insurers face a liability explosion if an FA inquiry confirms a connection between motor neurone disease and footballers' deaths.

The alarm was raised earlier this week when an Italian inquiry revealed disproportionately high levels of the condition among professional footballers.

Medical professionals and sports insurers are now warning there could be vast claims from footballers made ill by the disease.

Sports lawyer Tim Kevan said: "This development, combined with last year's ruling that former player Jeff Astle died from a brain disease caused by heading footballs, means that litigation is a possibility."
