A recent survey said that motorists would prefer fit speed limiters in their cars in return for cheaper car insurance.

The survey by Confused.com interviewed 1,000 drivers about their insurance habits. It found that 72% would consider having limiters, 14% without financial incentive.

The Department for Transport is currently testing Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) systems.

The computer is linked to a satellite-positioning system which can identify the local speed limit. Drivers who break the limit find that their accelerator begins to vibrate and the pedal becomes stiff.

Initial results from the trials showed that drivers became less sceptical of the system over time as they did not have to worry about speed cameras.
