The St Paul Companies reported fourth quarter net income of $244.4m (£149.2m),
This compares to a net loss of $736m (£449.3m) in the same period of 2001.
Operating earnings were $194.4m (£118.6m) compared to an operating loss of $646.7m (£394.8m) in the same period the year before.
Figures for the fourth quarter of 2001 reflected reserve strengthening, restructuring charges and goodwill write-downs.
