Discrimination case
A woman underwriter who claims to have lost out on £2m worth of shares after taking maternity leave has reached an out of court settlement with her former employer.

Jane Hayes was a senior underwriter with Charman Underwriting Agencies, specialising in writing onshore and offshore risks, who lost an employment tribunal three years ago. She had claimed male colleagues received £4m in share options, compared to her £2.5m.

Hayes won the right to appeal, but reached an agreement with the company before the hearing. Lawyers said she could have won up to £1.5m on the grounds of equal pay and sexual discrimination.

Brit branding
Brit Insurance Holdings has formed Brit Underwriting which it claims will be the "generic brand name" for all underwriting activity across the group's Lloyd's and non-Lloyd's platforms.

It added that the changes should also result in "more effective use of capital across the group", an increased presence in its markets, more efficient portfolio management of classes of business, better utilisation of reinsurance and a reduction in costs.
