The news that Cantor Index is launching a weather spread betting market based on Met Office statistics is a case of Christmas coming early, in more ways than one.

First, those companies with an acute weather sensitivity will at long last have a bolt hole to be able to offset Mother Nature's risk.

Second, private meteorological companies like our own will now be able to openly pit ourselves on behalf of betting clients, against the perceived monopolistic wisdom of the Met Office - which will be very interesting.

The pot of gold at the end of this particular rainbow may well be set to shine very brightly.
