Siemens Datatrak's new security and tracking device, Trakbak II, has achieved Thatcham certification, the company announced today.
The company says this is significant because insurers are increasingly looking to broaden the catchment of vehicles with tracking devices.
Trakbak II uses Siemens Datatrak's low frequency positioning and private radio network which locates and tracks vehicles down to street level. When a vehicle is moved illegally the tracking device is activated and the owner notified.
The company says that Trakbak's real-time tracking enables it to monitor the route the vehicle takes and direct the police to it as quickly as possible, with the data collected being admissible in court.
UK managing director of Siemens Datatrak Mike Bateson said: "Our discussions with law enforcement and insurance bodies have emphasised the vulnerability of commercial vehicles, whose value increases with the cargo on board, and of private cars whose existing security systems are still being by-passed by the determined thief.
"For vehicle insurers, tracking devices are an important part of risk management. The rapid response enabled by Trakbak II maximises the chances of recovering the vehicle quickly and catching the thieves red-handed."
