Claims from the thousands of holidaymakers delayed by the coach drivers' strike in the Balearic islands are likely to be limited by typical policies not paying out until the delay has reached eight or even 12 hours.

The average flight delay was five hours, with holidaymakers to Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza then facing a long wait to get a taxi to their destination.

Claire Holmwood, claims manager with travel insurer Club Direct, said its Classic policy paid out £20 after eight hours and again for each eight hours after that. The longest delay that had been claimed so far was 40 hours, she said.
