Am Best has placed its financial strength rating of A for the Trenwick Group under review, with negative implications.
The move comes after the insurer and reinsurer posted a loss of $50.8m (£35.1m) for the second quarter of 2001.
It also reported additional reserve strengthening – the third such action since 1999.
AM Best has expressed concern over whether Trenwick can restore profitablity to levels fitting of an A rating.
