The TUC is to call for employers to pay more towards the cost of insurance to cover compensation costs.

New research from the TUC, due out later today, is to criticise employers' complaints that employers' liability insurance premiums have risen too fast.

The research estimated that between them, British employers pay a total of between £3.3bn and £6.5bn towards insurance to cover compensation costs, despite workplace-related illnesses costing the economy £18bn a year.

At a joint meeting of MPs to be attended by the CBI and the ABI, at 4pm today, the TUC will question employers' complaints that employer liability insurance premiums have risen too fast.

TUC health and safety spokesman Owen Tudor said: "We need a system where the perpetrator pays, so that they have an incentive to prevent injuries and ill health.

"We need to complete the creation of the welfare state with a national rehabilitation service, and fair compensation for injury victims.

"For all that, employers need to pay more, but they need to get more too - insurers should help them protect their workers and get them back to work fast if the worst happens."
