Finance union Unifi has recommended that members accept renegotiated redundancy terms for 150 IT support staff at Direct Line's Croydon, Surrey and Pudsey sites. Unifi and Direct Line had been in discussions through ACAS.

Unifi has now issued a second ballot to see whether the IT staff will accept the new terms, with the results due on 14 November. It had previously issued a strike ballot to the workers affected by the redundancies.

Rob MacGregor, Unifi's chief negotiator at Direct Line's owner, the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), described the new terms as "reasonable".

"The terms are not everything we wanted, but they are a substantial improvement on where we were," he said.

Under the new terms, the redundancies have been pushed back, giving employees longer to prepare, said Unifi. It said members would also receive more compensation than initially proposed.
