Flood Defence Innovations (FDI), a company formed by the University of Nottingham, has developed a low-cost method of flood protection which could soon be available to flood-vulnerable homes and small businesses.

FDI is conducting feasibility tests on the flood protection system which is described as "lightweight, simple to assemble and collapsible for easy storage".

FDI said the system did not require modification to a property to install and the barrier could be adapted to fit different sizes and configurations of doorways.

It is expected to cost significantly less than existing domestic flood barriers which range in price from £80 to £350.

The company, which was set up with a £45,000 grant from the Department of Trade and Industry, said the system could be widely available from retail outlets and DIY stores, if successfully developed.

FDI is a joint venture between financiers in the insurance industry and the University of Nottingham.
