A fire protection association is collecting information about criminally applied fire protection installations in an effort to rid the construction industry of "cowboy" operators.
The Association of Specialist Fire Protection, which is based in Farnham, Surrey, is using its members to assemble detailed evidence of negligently applied fire protection installations.
The evidence will be passed on and pursued through relevant routes, such as building control and trading standards.
"After all, in the event of a fire, poor installation could mean the difference between life and death," the Association said.
Examples of poor installations include inadequately applied thickness of intumescent coatings, intumescent coatings cut or replaced with emulsion, boards with wrong fixings or sprays installed over inappropriate primer systems.
The initiative follows a meeting between the ASFP, other trade associations and members of various government departments with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Investigation methods and ways of improving fire protection installations were discussed.
The ASFP said it would welcome input from sources other than its own members. It can be contacted at Association House, 99 West Street, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 7EN.
