Severe weather conditions have been forecast for the next 24 hours over southern England and Wales.

The Met Office and GAB Robins said damage to property was likely with flooding due to 25-50mm of rainfall within a 6-12 hour period.

The Met Office also said winds in excess of 50 miles per hour were likely, which could cause structural damage to property. With trees in full leaf, it warned that there was an added risk of damage from falling trees or branches.

The Environment Agency warned that heavy rain and strong winds will affect southern parts of England this afternoon and evening. It said driving conditions will be difficult and localised flooding is possible.

It currently had five flood watches in effect, four in the Southwest of England, and one in Wales.

The Met Office's Wayne Elliott, said: “Climate research suggests that summers are likely to become drier across southern parts of the UK, with increased storminess in the winter months.

“However, this event shows how varied our short-term weather can be, proving that even in summer it is vital to be aware of the weather and possible effects on our lives and property.”
