Pensioner tourist guide told to buy £600 public liability policy

Whitstable pensioner Frank Schofield’ who for 18 months has stood by the harbour helping tourists’ has been told to buy £600 of public liability insurance or desist, the Telegraph reports.

Canterbury City Council, which used to provide leaflets for him to hand out, now says that he had no training for the job they are not prepared to pay to send him on a course.

Mr Schofield claims he is the victim of age discrimination and will have to give up his spot.

"I haven't got £600. I'm a pensioner," he said.

We have touch screens

A Canterbury City Council spokesman confirmed Mr Schofield has been told to take out public liability insurance to continue as an unofficial guide.

"We have tourism information at the divisional office, touch screens and information points in the buildings of partner organisations, and are happy with the tourism service we are providing," the spokesman said. "We are sorry if this decision has upset Mr Schofield but age has not played any role in this."
