Tiny fine for no licence or insurance by Chelsea player

Chelsea footballer Didier Drogba (31) was fined but not banned after admitting driving with no valid licence or insurance after claiming he thought his French insurance policy covered him to drive in the UK, the Standard reports.

He pleaded guilty to last November after police stopped his Mercedes on the A3 in Hook, Surrey. He also pleaded guilty to driving without a valid licence at Kingston magistrates' court. The £115,000-a-week footballer was fined £560.

When he came to the UK in 2004 he had an international licence but that had expired, leaving only his Ivory Coast licence.

“I believed that there was no reason to be worried about driving because I was insured,” he said.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
