Prominent Labour MP faces driving ban for driving with expired MoT and insurance

Houses of Parliament

On 6 July, Jon Cruddas, the MP for Dagenham and Rainham was stopped by police near Hyde Park in London after officers noticed what appeared to be a defective brake light, the Barking and Dagenham Post reports.

He has been summoned to appear before the City of London Magistrates’ Court later this month, where he could be given a driving ban, or considerable fines.

Ahead of the opening parliamentary session, the front bench Labour MP was appointed by party leader Ed Miliband as policy review co-ordinator and has launched a work programme to examine loneliness, mental health and welfare, areas where Labour want to compete with the Conservatives’ Big Society.

A Met police spokesman said: “A summons has been served, alleging driving without valid insurance and MoT in Bayswater Road by Jon Cruddas MP and is returnable to City of London Magistrates’ Court on October 26.”
