Launched in January of 1998 as Axa Provincial Insurance following the global merger of the UAP and Axa Groups in 1997, the company changed it name to Axa Insurance in October 1998. The acquisition of the Guardian Royal Exchange Group by Sun Life Provincial Holdings in May 1999 saw the integration of the Guardian Insurance and Guardian Direct portfolios under the new Axa Insurance brand.

Now part of the Axa Group, Axa Insurance has attained a number three position in the UK general insurance market

He is a charted insurer and an alumnus of both the University of Philadelphia, Wharton School and Templeton College, Oxford. He supports West Bromwich Albion FC and Worcestershire Cricket Club. He was appointed chief executive of Axa Insurance in August 1998

Axa Corporate Solutions was launched in September 2000. It comprises the former operations of Axa Re, Axa Global Risks and Axa Cessions worldwide. Employing approximately 2,300 staff around the world, Axa Corporate Solutions is headed by Jean-Marie Nessi and has its headquarters in Paris. Adrian Ballardie is the chief executive officer of the UK operation.

In addition to an expanding range of specialised and tailor-made covers, Axa Corporate Solutions will continue to underwrite all lines of business – both insurance and reinsurance – previously written by its component operations and targeting companies with a minimum turnover of £100m.

Adrian Ballardie graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1974, and is a chartered insurer. He has 26 years' experience of underwriting facultative reinsurance and treaty business, in the London market, most of which has been in the international non-marine property field.

From 1997-1998 he was general manager of Axa Re UK and was appointed chief executive officer from July 1998. He was appointed chief executive officer of the Axa Corporate Solutions UK operation in 2000
