UK flights to be suspended from midday following Icelandic eruption

Volcanic ash from Iceland is causing massive disruption across UK airports.

The Air Traffic Control Service said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace from midday until atleast 6pm other than emergency situations.

Flights in to Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick will be suspended from midday, according to airports operator BAA.

All Scottish airports have shut and most others around the UK cancelled or suspended flights.

It is thought that the ash cloud, the result of volcanic eruption in Iceland, could cause serious damage to engines.

Passengers have been advised to contact their airline prior to travel.

An Association of British Insurers spokesman said: “Anyone who is likely to be affected should contact the airline or airport they are travelling from for the most up-to-date travel information. Customers should check their travel insurance policy, and speak to their travel insurer if they need clarification.”
