Doctor continued dishonesty despite advice from other insurers

A Chelmsford oncologist has been barred from practising for a year after the General Medical Council (GMC) upheld a complaint by Aviva that he had misbilled the insurer.

The GMC determined that Dr Sethna Saverymuttu claimed over a period for more complex procedures than those performed, thus enabling him to receive higher remuneration than he was entitled to. The claims related to work that he had carried out for private patients.

As a result, the GMC further determined that Saverymuttu was dishonest in continuing his actions despite being advised by other insurers, particularly AXA PPP, of the importance of using the correct procedure. He has been suspended from practising following a hearing at the GMC last week.

Health Insurance Counter Fraud Group chairman Dr Simon Burke said: “This sends out a strong message to the medical community as a whole that this was misleading and unacceptable.”
