Boat builders, marina operators and port authorities are all potential customers for Independent's new insurance package for waterfront-based businesses.

The company's tailored product is designed to address the myriad wet and dry risks faced by businesses with canal, river or coastal locations.

It complements Independent's experience in the field of marine and commercial insurance.

Independent marketing manager Graeme Sutton said the policy is appropriate for a wide range of businesses from large cargo terminals to medium-sized boat builders.

"On the face of it, waterfront businesses are as diverse as they come in terms of both size and profile. However, they share similar business and environmental risks and we have developed a flexible solution with the simplicity of one policy," he said.

He also believes the package offers a more streamlined and comprehensive service to brokers' clients.

Sutton explained: "By offering this seamless, one-stop shop solution to brokers and their clients, the Waterfront Package will completely do away with the administrative burden created by overlapping, complicated claims handling and internal trading barriers."

Included in the policy is cover for material damage, business interruption, public and employer's liability, together with specific marine and engineering protection.

Added to this, Independent can offer access to local underwriters, and a free risk management service.

Longer-term insurance is also available, in addition to environmental impairment liability, directors and officers and accident and health cover.
