Wolverhampton Metropolitan Borough Council launched a tenants' contents insurance scheme this week through specialist broker JLT Group Services.
The broker has arranged a minimum sum insured for contents of only £10,000, or £6,000 for policyholders of 60 years of age or more.
Weekly premiums, payable at the council's offices, start from 80p.
Premium collection is virtually the council's only involvement. Almost all other management tasks will be carried out by administrators contracted by JLT.
The scheme covers belongings on a "new for old" basis with no age limit and there is no excess on claims.
