The poll in Insurance Times asking readers to vote whether they would join a voluntary General Insurance Standards Council, the self-regulatory body in the UK, received our highest number of hits.

More than 1,400 clicked on www.insurancetimes.co.uk last Friday. The no vote won by 56.4% while 43.6% were in favour of joining.

The poll was carried out after the General Insurance Standards Council was forced into a U-turn recently by opting for voluntary membership for at least the next 12 months.

GISC made the decision after discovering that it could face a legal challenge on compulsion because of the New Competition Act, which becomes active from March 1. This was the first time the Insurance Times site was used for such a poll.
