Pets are set to become part of the international jet set, thanks to a new government initiative and insurance provider Petwise. The company has extended its cover to include pets travelling with their owners to Europe under the Government's proposed "Passports for Pets" scheme.

From February 28, all new UK policyholders who take their pets abroad will have automatic cover provided to claim for specified veterinary costs incurred in 22 eligible European countries.

Owners who want to take their pet abroad must have the animal micro-chipped and vaccinated against rabies before getting a health certificate.
