Over 5,000 properties hit by floods could be uninsured, according to Abbey Home Insurance research

Recent reports from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs suggests that the number of properties affected by the recent flooding across the UK could be over 20,000.

And research from Abbey Home Insurance indicates that as many as one in four or 5,000 of these properties could be uninsured.

Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing at Abbey, said: "For some people home insurance is considered an optional extra, when in fact good cover for your home is vitally important for protecting yourself against the unknown, such as the recent flooding.

“There will be some victims of the flooding who will believe they have been covered but when they come to claim for the damage caused to their home they will be turned down

“This demonstrates how important it is for people to ensure that they not only protect their property, but take out a policy that will comprehensively cover them.

“There will be some victims of the flooding who will believe they have been covered, but when they come to claim for the damage caused to their home they will be turned down because their insurance company will not properly cover them.

"Our research shows that each year, an average of 257,000 of all home insurance claims are declined as a result of the policyholder not having the appropriate home insurance cover.”
