Dept of Health to investigate competition to NHSLA

Insurers could provide cover to the National Health Service (NHS) after a review of soaring negligence claims by Marsh.

The Department of Health has said it will consider private sector competition to the NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA), according to the Financial Times.

The state-sponsored NHSLA pays out and settles negligence claims against hospitals.

A Marsh review of the NHSLA, published last month, said that the government should consider opening up clinical negligence cover to the private sector.

In the report, Marsh supported the idea of insurers handling non-clinical negligence claims but doubted whether insurers would be keen to provide clinical negligence cover at the moment.
