Property specialist explains name change at great length.

Erinaceous Insurance Services unveiled its new brand name this week. The property specialist will become Barbon Insurance Group later this year.

The name Barbon has a good pedigree, being derived from Dr Nicholas Barbon, who is considered the father of fire insurance in the UK.

Barbon introduced fire insurance for buildings to England after the Great Fire of London in 1666. In 1680 he was instrumental in forming the first fire insurance company to insure buildings, known as the Fire Office, located behind London’s Royal Exchange.

He was also one of the major rebuilders of the City, developing whole sections of London in both commercial and residential real estate.

And even if he hadn’t done all that, Barbon would have gone down in history for his astonishing and rather severe full name, Nicholas Unless-Jesus-Christ-Had-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned Barbon. Imagine getting that lot on a policy document.
