Following COP26 in Glasgow a few weeks ago there has been a lot of coverage about how we can all do our bit to help protect the planet we live on

The UK was the proud host of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow a few weeks ago and in the run up, and since then, there has been a lot of coverage about how we can all do our bit to help protect the planet we live on.

Whether it’s reducing use of single use plastics or even changing to energy efficient light bulbs, there have been many things highlighted that people can do to help tackle the problem.

We have been thinking about what our commercial customers might be considering to help make their businesses more environmentally friendly, and something we have seen lately is an increase in Electric or Hybrid vehicles being included to the fleet.

If your clients are considering adding electric vehicles to their fleet then there are many reasons to do so:

Another incentive may be that electric cars are harder to steal than conventionally powered cars. They can now be tracked and even turned off remotely should a thief manage to steal an electric car. However, charging cables are more of an attractive target for thieves. They often seem to be left unattended outside the home, so we would urge owners to secure these away safely when not in use.

It’s worth noting that there are a limited number of garages that can repair electric cars across the UK, especially those that can handle Tesla repairs, so it may take a bit longer to get the vehicle back in the event of an accident. Covéa do provide a courtesy car if required, however due to supply of vehicles, it would not be an electric car.

We are comfortable with writing electric vehicles as part of your customers’ fleets. We will rate them in the same way we assess all vehicles.

We would be keen to discuss any potential fleet risks with you. Please don’t hesitate to contact your local underwriter.
