US Government seeks unlimited damages following Deepwater Horizon disaster

The US Government is suing BP for the environmental damage following the Deepwater Horizon spill.

The legal action is on top of the £19.2bn that BP has already paid for clean-up and compensation.

The lawsuit leaves open the possiblity that the accident may have been caused by 'gross negligence'. The suit claims that BP failed to keep the well 'under control' and 'failed to use the best available and safest drilling technology to monitor the well's conditions', The Telegraph reports.

The action could extend the cost to insurers, especially if the US Government move triggers a chain of litigation that sees BP successfully suing its contractors.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
