Position was made redundant last year amid cost-cutting measures

Oval has recruited a new head for its insurance broking business, more than one year after a similar role was axed in a cost-cutting exercise.

Patrick O’Connell (pictured), previously regional managing director for the south, will spearhead the insurance broking division as managing director and is joining Oval’s senior executive committee.

In June 2009, Oval made the managing director of insurance broking role redundant in an attempt to control its cost base during the financial crisis, leading to Howard Pepper’s exit from the business.

Group managing director Jeff Herdman took over the responsibilities and will continue to oversee the insurance broking and financial services businesses, led by O’Connell and Steven Mitchell, respectively.

Oval’s eastern divisional director, Peter Blanc, is also joining the board as executive director and will continue to be based at Oval’s offices in Feering, Essex.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
