James Twining takes helm from Adrian Girling

James Twining has been named chief executive of JLT-owned managing general agency Thistle.

He takes over the day-to-day running of the MGA from Adrian Girling, who has stepped down as Thistle’s chairman to take another role in the JLT Group. According to the FSA Register, Girling became a director of JLT Specialty Limited on 30 January this year.

Twining (right) joined JLT in January 2011 as group strategy director. He was previously an associate principal at consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

Girling assumed responsibility for running Thistle in May last year after the departure of previous chief executive James Gerry. JLT made the CEO role at Thistle redundant after a review of the business “identified the duplication of some important aspects of the roles of the senior management”.

However, Girling’s decision to step down as Thistle chairman created the space for Twining to step in as chief executive.

Gerry had been the chief executive of Thistle since it began underwriting in 2008. Following his departure from Thistle he was named chair of underwriting agency GB Underwriting.
