Year established: 1902

History: Founded in 1902, today Miller is the only privately-owned independent broker of its size, based in the UK.

In the 100 years Miller has been in business it has built up a worldwide reputation for delivering results, through unrivalled expertise, sector knowledge and depth of relationships with the major markets - both internationally and in London.

Originally founded by Thomas Miller on 2 January 1902, who started a new insurance entity called Thos. R Miller & Son (Insurance) to complement his existing partnership of P&I Managers.

In 1974, a holding company was formed as part of a policy of diversification into new areas of non-marine business. This also entailed the creation of several separate trading companies, in order to meet the needs of clients at that time.

In 1983, Sir Peter Miller, then chairman of the holding company, introduced a unique employee trust ownership structure, which underpins the company's independence today.

By 1991, the company had expanded through the creation of worldwide ventures and trading relationships, and the company name was changed to The Miller Insurance Group.

In 1999, the company was restructured into a single trading entity with the aim of providing clients with a more uniform and comprehensive service.

This restructure facilitated cross-fertilisation of business and shared learning across the company.

2002 saw the introduction of a new corporate identity.

Biography: Graham Clarke began his insurance career in 1974 with Lloyd's broker Bain Dawes.

He joined Miller Insurance Services Ltd (formerly The Miller Insurance Group Ltd) in 1982 as a director of the company's energy division, and was appointed managing director of this division in 1990, with responsibility for developing the company's upstream and downstream energy business.

In the same year, he was also appointed to the board of the holdings company.

He was a member of the board that, in 1999, restructured Miller Insurance Services into one integrated company. Previously it had been made up of eight individual Lloyd's broking companies.

Since May 2000, when Graham became the company's first chief executive, he has successfully steered Miller into its second century of trading.
